Spring 2013 Update

Here's an update on a few things we've been up to since we moved to the Bay Area:

Bonnie was our first out-of-town visitor after we moved.  She came down in February and we had a great time.  The first night she and I had a girl's night out in San Francisco staying in a hotel, stuffing ourselves to the gills with great Italian food (seriously, did we need to share a piece of cheesecake after our bruschetta and pasta/gnocchi?), breakfasting at a cafe with the best fresh-squeezed orange juice ever, and shoe shopping.  Then with Paul and Andrew we went miniature golfing, I made Pad Thai, and we checked out the San Francisco Botanical Gardens.  It was such a nice visit and I loved that Andrew and Bonnie got to spend some time bonding and playing together.

Andrew took this one of us

Pad Thai!

It's not often that there's another adult around to take a photo of Paul and me together

Those are some tall redwoods

And they're really big around too!

Andrew and I got an open spot in a co-op preschool here in late March, so he has been going there three mornings a week and I have been working in the classroom one of those three mornings a week.  Both of the teachers and several of the other moms have commented on how well Andrew adapted to the new school.  They said it was as if he had always been there.  He just jumped right in to the routines of the school, made friends, and enjoyed himself.   Maybe that's because we've moved around so much already in his short life, or maybe he just has that personality.  Here's a photo of him riding one of the bikes at school, one of his favorite pastimes.

The preschool here is very open-ended and play-based, so during the two large chunks of free time the kids had each morning, Andrew got to choose his activities.  They had art projects, science or cooking projects, a carpentry area, a games room, a dress-up/playhouse area, a puppet theater, a block room, and painting easels always set up.  I think Andrew spent most of his time riding bikes, swinging on the tire swing, running around, and playing in the sandbox.  (And we paid how much for this?)  School is now out for the summer, but Andrew and I will be returning in the fall for another year there.

In April we continued the family tradition we started last year of celebrating Andrew's half birthdays.  I'm really trying to keep it from getting out of hand.  Andrew got really excited and started making all sorts of birthday requests/demands.  I kept telling him that it's not a real birthday and that we're just having half a birthday cake for fun.  I still did get him another little monster truck from the toy store that day because he loves monster trucks so much and it had been quite a while since he'd gotten to add to his collection.  He also ended up getting his face painted (that's a green cat on his right cheek) as well as a glitter tattoo on each hand thanks to our kind neighbor, Shelly, who's an artist and art teacher.  We had to go over and borrow a couple of eggs so I could make Andrew's half birthday cake while our car was in the shop, and she really spoiled him.  By the way, I really like our neighborhood.  We're actually getting to know our neighbors for a change, and they all seem really nice.  I learned that day that Shelly painted all the many, many murals on the walls of Andrew's preschool.  Cool!

We have been loving having a backyard for the first time ever!  Somehow this dirt hole developed in the middle of the grass back there, and Andrew turned it into his digging hole (and occasionally it becomes a mud hole).  Here he is, ankle deep in mud and loving it.  He had just asked me if I wanted to join him in the mud because it's so fun.

Paul and I got bikes this spring so we can keep up with Andrew while he rides.  We had been riding our scooters while he biked, but those limit the terrain you can go on to smooth pavement and they're slower.  We have gone on some bike trails around here already, and we look forward to lots more riding through the summer.

Andrew made this plate for me at preschool for Mother's Day.  I don't even know how he transitioned from not being able to draw people at all to drawing stick figures, but it happened sometime this late winter/early spring.  That figure on the plate isn't him or me, though, it's Sonic the Hedgehog which is his favorite these days.

Andrew is now in his second recreational soccer class offered through the city.  He really loves soccer and is good at hustling to get the ball.  In his first class he was with 3 and 4 year-olds, and I think all those kids were new to soccer.  Not to brag, but I think Andrew was the best at listening to the coaches, remembering not to use his hands, staying within the lines on the field, going after the ball, scoring goals, remembering not to leave his ball behind, etc.  I now have him in the 4-5 year-olds class, and the skills they're working on are more challenging for him.  Both classes mostly play games and do drills that are designed to teach the kids the basic skills of controlling the ball and playing the game.

We found out we are expecting another baby boy, and we're all pretty excited that Andrew will have a brother.  I'm enjoying being kicked from the inside.  No, really, it's such a neat feeling.  Here I am, 22 weeks pregnant on Sunday.

I'm super excited about that peach tree behind me in our backyard, too!  I have jam-making plans.

Paul is enjoying his job here at a start-up that's building a database search tool.  (Really, I'm not the one to explain what the project is).  He's the only UX (user experience) designer on the project, so he really has ownership of the interface design and he's loving it.  We're also enjoying getting to know his very small group of co-workers.  One of them has Paul going rock climbing with him once a week or two at a local rock climbing gym.

My parents visited, but I'll have to cover that in a separate post.  It's time to put this baby to bed.

Andrew Rides His Bike!

Paul and I are pretty proud of Andrew for learning to ride his bike with no training wheels on Sunday.  We obviously waited until he was past ready, since he picked it up immediately.

Here's how it went down:  Paul and Andrew took the training wheels off, and headed out front with Andrew's bike.  Paul then went back to the backyard to retrieve his own bike.  When Paul got back out front a few minutes later, Andrew nervously said something like, "I was thinking maybe I don't want to ride my bike today."  Paul insisted, and helped Andrew get on his bike and get started, holding onto Andrew's sides and then letting go.  He did this a couple of times before I came out front and Paul went in to get the camera.  While Paul was gone, Andrew picked up his bike, got on, and started riding all by himself.  He can now start, stop, and turn, all without falling.

Here's a little video:

In a side note, here's a funny conversation Andrew and I had tonight as I was putting him to bed:

Andrew, "I hope our baby will be cute."
Me, "I'm sure he'll be very cute.  Maybe he'll look like you."
Andrew, sternly, "No, he definitely won't be as good as me."
Andrew, happily,  "But he'll be cuter than me!"

Andrew thinks cute is pretty much equal to small, so the hierarchy of cuteness in our family, as he has decided, is first, Andrew, second, me, and third, Paul.  He finds ants to be very cute.

Welcome to California!

Andrew and I were invited to go to the beach with some of our new-found ward friends...on February 1st!  We must be in California.  It was a beautiful day.  It was cool at the beach.  I stayed in my sweatshirt the whole time, but it was sunny and nice and Andrew was perfectly happy to run around in a t-shirt and shorts and get his legs in the water.

Run Away!

Andrew the Dinosaur

Four year-olds say such funny things.

Some recent gems:

Mid-November:
I promised Andrew something, but Paul told Andrew "no" because he didn't know that I had promised it to Andrew.  Andrew asked why Daddy didn't know, and I told him, "Daddy doesn't know everything because he's not God."  Andrew quickly replied to me, "but you are God!"

Me:  "Andrew, you're new haircut looks so good!"
Paul:  "Yeah, Andrew, all the girls will like you now."
Andrew:  "Why?"
Paul:  "Because you look so cute."
Andrew:  "Hey, I'm not cute!"
Me:  "Well, how do you want to look?"  Paul:  "What do you think you look like?"
Andrew:  "A dinosaur!"

Andrew this morning at the breakfast table:  "Let's play punch-kiss.  You kiss, and I'll punch."

Happy Fall! Apple Picking Trip 1

I love fall in New Jersey!  September and October here are mostly sunny and still warm enough to be outside enjoying the countryside without having the yucky summer humidity.  In September, our church playgroup went to Sun High Orchard about an hour away to do some apple picking.  It was a beautiful day in the 70s, but I just couldn't resist wearing my cute boots :)

This goat appreciated Andrew's corn husks

Andrew pulls apples he picked in an orchard wagon

Andrew's favorite thing was picking up the pumpkins and hauling them around in the wagons

Andrew and his friends liked hauling each other, too

Andrew, holding his "First Day of Preschool" sign in front of our house

Andrew has now completed his first 10 weeks of preschool, and he loves it!  I love it, too.  (Grocery shopping all by myself is such a treat!)  He goes three mornings a week for a few hours each time.  There are 16 kids in his class, and three teachers.  Two of the kids from his church sunday school class go to school with him.

They color, paint, read books, build with blocks, act out stories they've read with the drama teacher, do puzzles, make collages, cut and paste, play collaboratively, play at the park across the street, eat snacks, sing songs, observe rocks in their sensory table, and lots of other fun things I'm sure.

The teachers take the time to teach the kids proper procedures for everything and they encourage independence among the children.  Andrew has learned how to start his coat zipper all by himself, carry scissors by creating a "jacket" around the blade end with his hand, and cough into his "cough catcher" (elbow).

Andrew and part of his class learning the "Hallelujah" song on the first day of school during worship

When I take him each morning, he takes off his coat and hangs it all by himself on a coat peg in the hallway outside his classroom.  Then all the kids and parents in the preschool meet for 15 minutes of "worship" (it's a Christian school) in one of the classrooms, lead by the head of the preschool.  They usually teach a bible story, lead us in songs that include sign language signs, and lead us in a prayer.  Then the parents get to hug their kids goodbye and the kids start their day by going potty (these teachers are smart!).  If the weather is good enough, they usually go immediately to the park for some time.  The teachers are all very kind and I feel like they really care for and enjoy the children.  In fact, due to Hurricane Sandy Andrew's school was closed for four of his school days.  When we returned, the head of the preschool said that all the teachers couldn't wait for the children to return to school.  Another example:  I send Andrew to school with sunglasses when it's sunny because his blue eyes are sensitive to the sun when playing outside.  I told the teachers about it and asked if it was ok.  I was afraid they would tell me "no" because they don't want to keep track of kids' extra stuff.  But Andrew's teacher said that they if it's something that helps Andrew, they would do their best to facilitate it.

I'm so glad we have a great place for Andrew to learn and grow and gain independence.  He was definitely ready for this next step in his development.  He's making lots of new friends, too.

Summer Vacation Part 2

Here's a wrap up of the rest of our summer vacation in Washington:

We had a family reunion with Paul's family, including a big family photo shoot.

Here's my cute niece, Melanie.  As my dad would say, "you look good in anything you eat."

Paul convinced his dad that re-doing his back deck would be a good family reunion project.  Here are Paul, Doug, and Steve hard at work.

The women-folk took care of the children and supervised from the hill.  The kids loved watching the construction.  At one point, they sat inside the upstairs sliding-glass door and watched the deck construction like TV while eating popcorn.

Heidi, Rebecca, and Lindsey

Paul's sister, Lindsey, watches the deck construction with Jeffrey and Andrew.

Here's my cute nephew, Jeffrey.

Andrew loved Melanie's car.
"Hey, baby, do you want a ride?"

Jeffrey apparently didn't love it as much.

The speed demon in action.

There's Melanie again!

We had a girl's night in--playing games, eating huge ice cream sundae's created by my father-in-law, and laughing really, really hard.

Sister-in-law Jeanette's parents have a great backyard full of fun stuff for the grandkids

Even the big kids enjoyed the teater-totter (here's brother-in-law Doug and my father-in-law Terry)
